Hansel (played by John Cameron Mitchell) has been fascinated by rock music since childhood and dreams of becoming a rock singer. One day, he meets an American soldier, Luther (played by Maurice Dean Wint), who promises to take him to America, but on the condition that Hansel must marry him. To pursue his dream, Hansel bravely undergoes gender reassignment surgery. Although the surgery leaves him with permanent scars, he finally sets foot on American soil. Two years later, Luther abandons Hansel. Alone in this unfamiliar land, Hansel perseveres and finds a job as a caretaker. He also forms a rock band called "The Angry Inch."
