In the 1930s, a rural boy named Tang Shuisheng arrives in Shanghai to rely on his uncle Liu (Li Xuejian). Through Liu's introduction, he becomes the personal servant of the song and dance queen Xiao Jinbao (Gong Li). Xiao Jinbao is the woman of the powerful Tang Laoye (Li Baotian), but she is having an affair with his subordinate Song Erye, who has long coveted Tang Laoye's position. Tang Laoye's sudden death prompts him to become wary, taking Xiao Jinbao, Shuisheng, and others to a small island only inhabited by the widow Cuihua and her two children for refuge, ordering that any familiar faces on the island be dealt with mercilessly. In her time with Cuihua, Xiao Jinbao gains a new understanding of life and gradually grows very dissatisfied with Tang Laoye's cruelty; however, her fate is still in his hands.
