Dewey Finn (played by Jack Black) is a rock musician in his thirties who is still fighting for his dreams. He despises hypocritical music that is poorly made and full of commercial flattery, focusing instead on pure rock that conveys genuine emotions. In pursuit of this, he has parted ways with countless bands and has yet to achieve success, facing the embarrassment of being evicted by his landlord. Dewey's landlord and old friend Ned Schneebly (played by Mike White) was once a fervent death metal musician but has now transformed into a good-natured homebody and substitute teacher. While at home with nothing to do, Dewey receives a call from a middle school looking to hire Ned for a substitute teaching position. Out of boredom and financial necessity, Dewey impersonates Ned and enters a prestigious school with strict discipline. The students' lethargy initially bores him, but one day Dewey accidentally discovers their musical talents. He then secretly leads these bookish kids into a brand new and exciting world of rock...
