Veteran soldier Ethan Edwards (played by John Wayne), who participated in the American Civil War, returns to his hometown in Texas after the war, hoping to reunite with his family at his brother's farm. Ethan has long harbored feelings for his sister-in-law, keeping this emotion to himself. However, a Comanche raid completely shatters Ethan's desires. During the Indian attack, both his brother and sister-in-law are killed, and his niece Debbie (played by Natalie Wood) is abducted, her fate unknown. To avenge his beloved sister-in-law and to find Debbie, Ethan, accompanied by his brother's adopted son Martin (played by Jeffrey Hunter), embarks on a difficult search that spans several years. Ethan spends five years and offers a hefty reward to find Chief Scar, but his deep-seated hatred for the Indians and nearly mad actions lead Martin to question the true motive behind Ethan's search for Debbie. Martin even fears that Ethan might kill Debbie, who has been assimilated by the Indians.
