After serving a twelve-year sentence for robbery, Gino (played by Alain Delon) is released from prison. With the enthusiastic help and gentle guidance of social worker Germain (played by Jean Gabin), he is determined to turn over a new leaf and start anew. However, Sheriff Jettler (played by Michel Bouquet), who believes that “a criminal is always a criminal,” remains distrustful and opposes him at every turn, ultimately forcing Gino into a corner where he loses control and kills Sheriff Jettler. After a cold and rigid court trial, Gino is finally led to the guillotine. This is a humanitarian film that strongly denounces and condemns authoritarian tyranny and the guillotine, with its profound themes and scenes often plunging the audience into deep emotional turbulence. When screened in Paris and its suburbs, it attracted as many as 480,000 viewers in just ten weeks. In 1981, after President Mitterrand took office, a new law was passed to abolish the death penalty in France.
