Orphan Heidi (played by Shirley Temple) lives with Aunt Dete (played by Mady Christians), who is unwilling to continue caring for her niece. Consequently, Dete takes Heidi a great distance to the remote home of her grandfather (played by Jean Hersholt). Initially, the grieving grandfather Adolph ignores his granddaughter whom he has never met, but over time, their bond deepens. However, the greedy Dete returns and tricks Heidi away to sell her as a maid. Angelic Heidi develops a close friendship with the weak daughter of her masters, Anna (played by Helen Westley); on the other hand, Adolph sets out on a journey to find his granddaughter...
