On June 12, 1930, Max Schmeling defeated Jack Sharkey, becoming one of the few non-Americans to hold the world heavyweight boxing title of this era. After successfully defending his title only once, he lost to the vengeful Sharkey on June 21, 1932, relinquishing the championship. On June 22, 1938, he famously lost to world heavyweight champion Joe Louis, known as the "Brown Bomber."
