On the eve of the millennium, awkward 12-year-old orphan Beverly Moody (played by Gemma Brooke Allen) discovers a damaged mixtape that her parents made when they were young. Her grandmother Gale (played by Julie Bowen), who raised Beverly, was also a teenage mother and has experienced the pain of losing a daughter; she is reluctant to speak about this sorrowful past. Beverly wants to take this opportunity to learn more about her parents. Thus, she embarks on a journey to find the songs included in the tape. Along the way, she meets quirky neighbor Ellen (played by Audrey Hsieh), intimidating Nikki (played by Olga Petsa), and cynical record store owner Arvin (played by Nick Toon), who will provide Beverly with clues to find the songs and help her reconcile with Gale.
