In 1937, German businessman John Rabe (played by Ulrich Tukur), who had lived in Nanjing, China for many years, and his wife Dora were preparing to return to Germany. He handed over his position at the Siemens China branch to his successor, but on the day of the farewell party, the Japanese army began bombing Nanjing, causing fires and looting, which led to riots in the city. In the panic, residents fled in all directions, and Rabe resolutely opened the company gates to shelter Chinese employees and other refugees. Foreign missionaries, doctors, and businessmen in Nanjing discussed establishing a "Nanjing International Safety Zone" to protect innocent civilians, with Rabe being elected as chairman. Just as Rabe had decided to leave the next day, he chose to stay behind to save the innocent people. Witnessing the inhumane atrocities inflicted by the Japanese imperial army on the people of Nanjing, Rabe became more actively engaged in outsmarting the Japanese army with his companions, trying to save more lives. An increasing number of refugees flooded into the safety zone, far beyond their imagination. Meanwhile, the Japanese army's atrocities grew more rampant, and Rabe's humanitarian efforts sparked their resentment, leading to repeated attacks on the safety zone, making supplies increasingly difficult. Hundreds of thousands of innocent civilians awaited Rabe's rescue; under immense pressure, how would Rabe accomplish this mission of humanity?
