Charlotte (played by Bette Davis) can already be considered an old maid. She has a stiff hairstyle, wears conservative clothing, and has a peculiar personality. Worse, she seems to have developed a bad habit of alcoholism. At the suggestion of her family, Charlotte decides to embark on a journey of healing and boards a cruise ship heading to distant horizons. On the cruise, Charlotte encounters a man named Jerry (played by Paul Henreid) and inadvertently forms a deep friendship with Jerry's daughter. Soon, Charlotte finds herself falling in love, but at this time, Jerry is not available; he is trapped in an unending marriage.
