Baby John Clayton is orphaned and taken in by the mother ape, Kala. Under Kala's care, the baby grows up and sees her as his biological mother, taking the name Tarzan, which means "white skin" in ape language. Tarzan becomes the king of the apes. When humans attack the forest, Kala is killed, and Tarzan accidentally saves Belgian Captain Philippe D'Arnot. The captain discovers, based on the necklace around Tarzan's neck, that he is the legitimate heir to the estate of Lord Greystoke and takes him back to England. Tarzan gradually learns the manners and customs of a gentleman and becomes engaged to Miss Jane Porter. Tarzan is shocked by the animal specimens in the museum and witnesses the shooting of his ape "father," deciding he no longer wants to live in civilized society. Ultimately, Tarzan bids farewell to his beloved fiancée and friend, Captain D'Arnot, and returns to his home in the African jungle.
