Written by Troy Kennedy Martin, this film describes five cunning soldiers during World War II who lead a group of American troops in tanks to break through the German defenses and rob a bank behind enemy lines of over ten million dollars in gold. Director Brian G. Hutton attempts to create a war adventure film in a comedic style, but the results are less than ideal. However, the main characters all have distinct personalities and deliver good performances, especially Clint Eastwood, whose performance was well-received by audiences. Coupled with an outrageous storyline, the film still maintains a certain level of entertainment.
