In May 1940, France found itself in a passive situation against the German army, facing imminent defeat. Charles received an urgent order: he had just been appointed a general in the army and needed to immediately head to the front lines to command the battle. He had to leave his wife and three children behind, and after ensuring their safety, he left with a sense of relief. However, after a battle, Charles felt overwhelmed and worried, fearing that he lacked the ability to lead the many French soldiers to victory in the war. At the same time, he was concerned for his family and wanted to end the war quickly to return to them. During a military discussion, Pétain maintained a skeptical and negative attitude regarding France's chances of defeating Germany, advocating for negotiations with Hitler. Charles knew that even if they negotiated, France would still be in a passive position, so he argued for continued resistance. Meanwhile, Charles learned that he had lost contact with his family, who, like thousands of other French families, had been captured by German troops during their escape. Their fate was still unknown. This further strengthened Charles's resolve to continue fighting, not just for his own family but to protect the land of France and to secure peace and stability for the French people.
