The impoverished actress Madeline and her lawyer friend Pauline are cohabiting in a small apartment, tirelessly dealing with various debt collections every day. One day, a police officer comes knocking. It turns out that the famous producer Montferand has been shot dead in his home, and Madeline, who had previously visited Montferand's house and was sexually harassed by him, becomes the prime suspect. Moreover, Madeline possesses a handgun. During the police inquiry, Madeline and Pauline consider the idea that if they confess to the crime as self-defense, they won't only avoid prison but also have a chance to gain fame. Reality unfolds just as they imagined; Madeline walks out of the courtroom unscathed and becomes even more famous due to her brilliant testimony and Pauline's defense, leading them to live a prosperous life. Witnessing their rising fame and fortune, the real killer cannot sit idle and demands money from them. Anticipating a tragic outcome if the truth comes out, the three propose to collaborate. Ultimately, the three work together to star in a play titled "The Trials of Suzette," inspired by this case.
