The death of his wife brings profound trauma to Howard Beale (Peter Finch), the network's star anchor, plunging him into unbearable pain and sorrow. The network decides to fire Howard, who has lost interest in his job, and his old friend Max (William Holden) becomes the unfortunate messenger of this bad news. Learning that he is about to be fired after years of hard work for the network, Howard is furious and, in the next day's program, he shockingly announces to the audience that he will be committing suicide live on air. Howard's outrageous act angers the network executives, and it provides an opportunity for the unsatisfied president, Frank (Robert Duvall), to pick a fight with Max. During the following day's news broadcast, Howard is supposed to apologize for his careless words, but in a fit of rage and humiliation, he instead launches an attack on the various ills of contemporary America. Female producer Diana (Faye Dunaway) sees an opportunity in Howard's behavior; she conspires with Frank and becomes the driving force behind Howard.
