Like other works by Godard, this film does not follow the traditional arc of cinematic narrative: beginning, conflict, and resolution. Instead, it presents the complicated yet empty life of the female protagonist, Juliette Jansen (played by Marina Vlady), over 24 hours. In mid-1960s France, as various social philosophies were changing, Juliette appears to be a middle-class married mother, but her true identity is that of a part-time prostitute, dealing alone with heavy life pressures. Juliette first takes her screaming, crying child to a man who specifically cares for the children of call girls, and then begins her day’s activities. Shopping, household chores, and taking care of her child are punctuated by appointments with clients. The narrative form in the film is already fragmented, filled with various voiceovers, subtitles, symbols, and unrelated visual clips. Although the film had a script during shooting, Godard asked the actors to break through the "fourth wall," improvising dialogue and interacting with the crew off-camera, which gives the film an experimental and critical consciousness.
