The story is based on the true story of Italian linguist and novelist Gavino Ledda, who succeeded in self-education after starting as a shepherd in the Sardinia region. Before the age of twenty, he was illiterate but willingly joined the army to escape his father's tyranny. A comrade in the army taught him how to read and write, which transformed his spiritual world. After leaving the military, he went to university to study linguistics and then returned to his hometown to confront his strict father with his knowledge. Behind-the-scenes: This film is the first major international success of Italian directors the Taviani brothers, winning the Palme d'Or at the Cannes Film Festival. The directors used the long-silent technique of Italian neorealism to depict this story of father-son conflict set in a remote village, creating a simple yet touching atmosphere with a sense of primitive beauty. The moment young Gavino decides to trade two small lambs for an accordion after listening to a stranger play is thrilling because he finally takes action to rebel against his father.
