The story begins in 1930s Austria, where Jewish entrepreneur Viktor (played by Moritz Bleibtreu) and his girlfriend Lena (played by Ursula Strauss) meticulously run their gallery, enjoying a thriving business. Rudy (played by Georg Friedrich), a pure Aryan, is a mutual friend of theirs, and they share a close bond. Viktor owns a painting by Michelangelo, which unexpectedly becomes a turning point in the fate of the three. War breaks out, and Jews become targets of Nazi extermination. Viktor is sent to a concentration camp, and the painting he collected is confiscated by Rudy, who is now an officer in the village; it becomes a “gift” to appease the Italians among the Nazis. However, the painting is identified as a forgery, and Rudy is ordered to find Viktor, for only he knows where the original is hidden.
