59-year-old Daniel Blake (played by Dave Johns) is a carpenter who, due to heart problems, for the first time in his life needs to apply for social benefits. Although his doctor has forbidden him from working, he decides to risk a fine to look for a job. During his repeated visits to the "job center" seeking employment, he meets Katie (played by Hayley Squires), a single mother who has to care for two children.
