The film is adapted from the graphic novel of the same name by Iranian illustrator Marjane Satrapi and tells her coming-of-age story in an autobiographical format, reflecting the social changes in Iran. After 1979, Iran initiated the Islamic Revolution, leading to social unrest. The failure of the revolution dimmed hopes for democracy, and the country became increasingly conservative, causing great suffering among the people. Nine-year-old Marjane is precocious and sensitive; she cleverly evades the authorities, becoming enamored with Western punk bands and pop music, immersing herself in her own world. After the outbreak of the Iran-Iraq War, life in Iran became even more difficult. Marjane gradually grew up, and her increasingly bold behaviors worried her parents, who sent her to school in Austria when she was 14. In Austria, as an Iranian, Marjane had to face discrimination and feelings of inferiority. When she finally overcame her psychological barriers and earned recognition, the pain of love and longing for her hometown compelled her to return to her parents' side. At this time, Iran continued to endure the ravages of war, and the restrictions on women's lives due to religion became increasingly severe. Marjane began to question whether she should continue living in this oppressive country.
