Mitsumura Shinnojō (played by Takuya Kimura) is an ordinary low-ranking samurai whose job is to test food for the feudal lord. Prepared meals are first consumed by the food tester, and only confirmed safe will they be served to the lord. During one testing, Shinnojō becomes blind, losing his sight is akin to becoming useless, and his fate takes a downturn. Fortunately, his beautiful and wise wife, Kayo (played by Danrei), helps him to face life again. However, the Mitsumura family loses their source of income. At the suggestion of friends and family, Kayo asks the higher-ranking samurai, Shimada Tōmi (played by Mitsugorō Bandō), to plead with the lord to retain half of Shinnojō's salary to maintain their livelihood. But Shimada uses Shinnojō's salary as leverage and forces Kayo to yield to him. Upon discovering this, Shinnojō cannot accept the reality, divorces his wife, and decides to fight Shimada to reclaim the samurai dignity that is more precious than life itself.
