The Hong Xing Society's negotiations with a rival gang break down, leading to a violent confrontation. The Hong Xing leader, Li Kun, is stabbed in the chaos and succumbs to his injuries, throwing the organization into disarray. Li Wanhao (played by Chow Yun-fat), who has been studying and living in the United States, returns to Hong Kong with his wife and child to mourn his father, and reluctantly takes on the position of leader at the pleading of the elders. Although born into a triad family, Wanhao has never participated in gang affairs and knows nothing about the rules and intricacies of the underworld, leading to a series of reform measures that attract criticism and attacks from other gangs.
