The Hong Xing Society's negotiations with a rival gang break down, leading to a violent confrontation. The Hong Xing leader, Li Kun, is stabbed in the chaos and succumbs to his injuries, throwing the organization into disarray. Li Wanhao (played by Chow Yun-fat), who has been studying and living in the United States, returns to Hong Kong with his wife and child to mourn his father, and reluctantly takes on the position of leader at the pleading of the elders.
