The film tells the story of a simple and honest young man named Peter, who is a bricklayer. He is very filial to his parents and even builds a house for them. However, their attitude towards him does not seem to improve as a result. Later, he meets the woman he loves, Erika. They move to Munich together, but the pressures of life and financial difficulties gradually change Peter, ultimately leading him to become a prisoner, all for the sake of winning his wife’s love… The film is regarded by some critics as Rainer Werner Fassbinder's best representative work.
