A 204-minute long film definitely requires a grandiose theme. In this respect, Italian director Mario Martone's "We Believe" accomplishes that. Three young friends, influenced by the French Revolution of the 1820s, decide to devote themselves to the revolutionary cause for democracy. The film follows the entanglements and experiences of the three friends across three different time periods while also illustrating the founding history of the Kingdom of Italy from a micro perspective. Throughout this process, the three friends, due to their different personalities and family backgrounds, experience various twists and grudges, including fraternal conflicts arising from differing understandings of the revolutionary cause. Under the control of the veteran director Mario Martone, this grand theme is presented with magnificent visuals and thrilling scenes; however, it would be more suitable to be edited into a television series, allowing for more fleshed-out and vivid character portrayals.
