Josh (Max Pomeranc) is an ordinary American boy who miraculously defeats his experienced father, Fred (Joe Mantegna), while playing chess one day. After that, Josh enters a chess tournament, impressively winning match after match, showcasing his remarkable talent. His parents decide to nurture Josh into a chess prodigy. One day, a man named Vinnie (Laurence Fishburne) appears in Josh's life, and over time, they forge a deep friendship. Meanwhile, his parents hire a prestigious Go teacher, Bruce (Ben Kingsley), to guide Josh. However, it doesn't take long for Josh to become weary of the monotonous life of sitting in front of the chessboard day after day.
