In Brooklyn, New York in 1988, Bobby (played by Joaquin Phoenix) manages a large club for Russian businessman Boris Vaslov. He is deeply in love with his girlfriend Amanda (played by Eva Mendes), and both his career and love life are going well. However, Bobby feels a strong aversion to his family; his father, the police chief of New York, and his brother Joseph (played by Mark Wahlberg), who has recently become the head of the drug enforcement unit, create an uncomfortable environment for him. He unhesitatingly rejects Joseph's request for collaboration, allowing drug lord Vadim to operate in his club. Joseph's raid on the club infuriates Bobby and invites Vadim's retaliation. After witnessing his brother seriously injured by Vadim, Bobby can no longer remain uninvolved. He takes on an undercover mission for the police, leading to the dismantling of Vadim's drug factory. Yet, unwilling to accept defeat, Vadim returns, but this time he faces a combined assault from Bobby and Joseph...
