Antonio (played by Nino Manfredi), Gianni (played by Vittorio Gassman), and Nicola (played by Stefano Satta Flores) are close friends during the war. After the war, they return to their hometown and begin their drastically different lives. Antonio meets the beautiful girl Luciana (played by Stefania Sandrelli) and falls in love, but Luciana has feelings for Gianni. Eventually, Gianni chooses to marry the daughter of a marquis, leaving Luciana in pain. At this moment, Antonio reappears by Luciana's side, accompanying and protecting her.
