Five-year-old Zeze (played by João Guilherme de Ávila) is a boy who is quite different from other children; he seems to be much more mature than his peers. Born on Christmas Day, he was initially seen by relatives and friends as a gift from God, but he was born into a poor and troubled family. After his father's business failed and his mother and sister had to work in a factory, Zeze's treatment at home deteriorated significantly, and he often faced inexplicable beatings and blame. Although Zeze's life is difficult, he still warms everyone around him with his enthusiasm and kindness. Zeze likes to confide his misfortunes to his imaginary friends, among whom a sweet orange tree is considered his closest companion. A man named Antonio (José de Abreu) appears in Zeze's life and gradually replaces the sweet orange tree, becoming Zeze's only support in real life.
