Sonja (played by Lena Stolze) is a high school student in Bavaria, Germany. To participate in an essay competition, she collects materials to write a paper on "her hometown under the Third Reich." However, as her investigation deepens, she encounters increasing resistance. Both villagers and government officials are unwilling to let Sonja uncover the Nazi history of this small town. Sonja's family and love life come under immense pressure, and she herself is taken to court by the government. Overnight, the innocent girl in everyone's eyes seems to turn into the bad girl that everyone hates… This film is based on true events and was nominated for the Best Foreign Language Film at the 1991 Oscars and won the Silver Bear at the 1990 Berlin Film Festival.
