Does Jane Austen's (played by Anne Hathaway) life mirror the twists and perfect endings found in her writing? "Becoming Jane" depicts her life in a biographical manner: her mother tirelessly attempts to arrange a marriage for her with a wealthy man from the upper class. However, Jane refuses to accept a loveless marriage, believing that women should support themselves through their own abilities. Therefore, she rejects the proposal from the noble Mr. Wisley and falls in love with the like-minded Tom Lefroy (played by James McAvoy). There are many obstacles, as some thwart their relationship, leading Tom’s family to disapprove of their romance. Tom decides to elope with Jane, but this would cut off his financial support, and Jane would face societal pressures and a life of poverty. How far will they go on their path to elopement? Will there be a happy ending?
