The story takes place on the picturesque island of Sicily, where the aristocrat Baron Cephalus (played by Marcello Mastroianni) is a fallen nobleman who feels extremely weary of his dull marriage to his wife, Sylvia (played by Margherita Girelli). Coupled with the constant seduction from his stunning cousin Angela (played by Stefania Sandrelli), Cephalus is determined to rid himself of Sylvia. However, divorce was illegal in Italy at the time, so to escape the marriage, Baron Cephalus must seek another way. Through various "efforts" by Baron Cephalus, he ultimately kills his wife but is given only a very short sentence. Behind bars, he fantasizes about a happy life in the future, filled with hope and excitement. However, when freedom finally arrives, will his life truly be as wonderful as he imagined?
