In an accident, Domenico (played by Marcello Mastroianni) saves the beautiful woman Filumena (played by Sophia Loren). The two fall in love at first sight and quickly become romantically involved. Unfortunately, Domenico is a philanderer, and as time goes by, he no longer remains devoted to Filumena and turns to other women. Filumena, though of humble status, is a devoted person; she even resorts to some deceitful means to become Domenico's wife. Unfortunately, Domenico sees through Filumena's lies, and she faces the prospect of separation from her lover once again. Filumena has three children, and she tells Domenico that one of them is his biological offspring. It is only then that Domenico, awakened by his conscience, returns to Filumena, but he never knows which of the children is his own.
