Marcus Messner is an introverted and high-achieving college freshman who feels relieved to finally escape his overbearing parents, who constantly worry about his safety. While studying in the library, Marcus encounters the beautiful student Olivia Hutton, and the two quickly fall in love. After a quarrel with his roommate, Marcus moves to a different dormitory and is reprimanded by the principal. The principal believes Marcus has social issues and tries to convince him to conform to many problems at school, but Marcus stands his ground and debates with the principal, only to suffer from an appendicitis and land in the hospital. Once admitted, Marcus feels incredibly happy because of Olivia's frequent visits, dreaming of a future life with her. Upon hearing about his illness, Marcus's mother rushes to see him and discovers scars on Olivia's wrist from a suicide attempt, leading her to demand a breakup. Olivia disappears, and Marcus learns from the principal that Olivia, who has a history of mental illness, has had another breakdown and is being hospitalized for treatment. Faced with his parents' neurotic worries, the school's dogmatic educational methods, and the departure of his beloved, young Marcus's repressed emotions burst forth, leading him to a battlefield filled with smoke. The film is adapted from Philip Roth's 2008 novel of the same name.
