The story takes place in 1941, when Hong Kong is shrouded in the shadow of war. The profit-seeking businessman Kai Shu (played by Law Kar-Ying) has three daughters: Xin Di (played by Yip Yuk-king), Wang Di (played by Chiu Shuk-ching), and Ai Di (played by Chan Siu-ha). The vicious stepmother dislikes Xin Di and Wang Di because they are not her biological daughters. Open-minded Wang Di has had a crush on the progressive young man Shen Fang (played by Tuo Zonghua) for many years. When she discovers that her sister Xin Di also has feelings for Shen Fang, she finds herself in a dilemma between family loyalty and romantic love. On December 25, Hong Kong falls; the Japanese army's iron hooves trample every inch of land and the hearts of every Hongkonger. Society descends into chaos, and there is a severe shortage of money and food. To protect himself, Kai Shu becomes a traitor, even sending Xin Di into the hands of the Japanese to gain their trust.
