Joy (Cameron Diaz) has lost herself by centering all her attention around her boyfriend Mason. However, Mason becomes tired of this and decides to break up with Joy. Jack (Ashton Kutcher) works at his father's furniture factory but is unmotivated, and his disappointed father fires him in frustration. The two disheartened individuals, encouraged by their friends Tipper (Lake Bell) and Hate (Rob Corddry), head to Las Vegas for a vacation. Surrounded by the vibrant nightlife, these two emotionally wounded souls open up to each other and spend a wild and wonderful night together. The next morning, they discover they are married, and a gamble that Joy financed while Jack contributed his effort wins them a jackpot of 3 million dollars. Both want to keep the winnings for themselves and seek the help of a judge. To punish them for treating their marriage lightly, the judge rules to freeze the winnings for 6 months. Refusing to give in, the two decide, at the suggestion of their friends, to "take down" the other and force a divorce, allowing themselves to claim the prize.
