The story takes place in Florence in 1938, where Mary (Kristin Scott Thomas) is about to begin her pleasant vacation. By chance, Mary meets the older businessman Edgar (James Fox), who immediately begins to pursue her passionately. Mary does not love Edgar, but his wealth and the prospect of a life of luxury leave her in a state of hesitation. At this critical moment, three men of vastly different social standings and personalities appear before Mary: the handsome American Larry (Sean Penn), the fascist officer Leopatì (Massimo Ghini), and the penniless young man Rachel (Jeremy Davies). Mary takes a special interest in the struggling Rachel, and due to her compassion, Rachel mistakenly interprets her kindness as love, thus sowing the seeds of tragedy.
