The Chi family has been in business for generations and has a strong background. The Gu family is a prestigious scholarly family with considerable status. The wedding of the Chi family's young master, Chi Rui, and Miss Gu Zhi Xia from the Gu family caused a stir in the whole city. Gu Zhi Xia seemed like a celestial fairy, instantly captivating Chi Rui. However, on the night of their wedding, the notorious bandit Xiang Tian broke into their new home to take Zhi Xia away, revealing that the two had secretly pledged their lives to each other long ago.
Chi Rui stopped Xiang Tian's actions and, surrounded by the police, shot Xiang Tian dead.
Zhi Xia was discovered to be pregnant, and naturally, the child was Xiang Tian's. Zhi Xia requested a divorce from the Chi family, and Chi's mother was willing, but Chi Rui refused to agree, insisting that Zhi Xia was his woman and only he could decide her fate. He wanted Zhi Xia to terminate the pregnancy and stay in the Chi family.
Zhi Xia vowed never to comply and ultimately bravely gave birth to the child. Chi Rui then married another woman, You Rong, who knew of Chi Rui's feelings for Zhi Xia and thus joined forces with Chi's mother to torment Zhi Xia in various ways. Zhi Xia endured the suffering, and Chi Rui turned a blind eye, as his feelings for Zhi Xia were quite complicated; he loved her yet also hated her.
One day, You Rong accidentally fell and miscarried. She falsely accused Zhi Xia, shifting all responsibility for her miscarriage onto her. Chi's mother was furious and demanded that Zhi Xia be thrown into a well, and also wanted to kill her child. At a critical moment, Chi Rui arrived, saved Zhi Xia, but could not quell the anger of Chi's mother and You Rong, so he threw Zhi Xia's child into the well.
Devastated by the loss of her child, Zhi Xia went mad, refusing to eat or drink, and only wished for death. One night, Chi Rui carried her onto a cart, intending to let her go, and on the cart was her child. What Chi Rui had thrown in was just a swaddled bundle. The baby was not dead.
The cart carrying Zhi Xia drove away, and at the same time, the seemingly dead Xiang Tian had escaped from prison. It turned out that he had not died that night; he had survived and endured torture in the prison where Chi Rui had kept him. Upon learning of Xiang Tian's escape, Chi Rui rode a horse through the night to pursue Zhi Xia, changing his mind. He could not let Zhi Xia go so easily; why should they have their family reunited...?
The escaped Xiang Tian was determined to find Zhi Xia and take her away from captivity, only to learn that she had given birth to a son. Chi Rui also used the child as a threat, manipulating Zhi Xia to trap Xiang Tian. In utter despair, Xiang Tian mistakenly believed that the woman he loved—Zhi Xia—had betrayed him. Consequently, he kidnapped the child and lured Zhi Xia to the mountains. Unbeknownst to him, Chi Rui followed them, leading Xiang Tian to think Zhi Xia had betrayed him again. They began a deadly game of Russian roulette, taking turns to shoot themselves with a revolver. Zhi Xia could no longer stop the two men, who were mad with love. She raised the knife in her hand, and Zhi Xia died. Xiang Tian finally understood he had misjudged Zhi Xia and also took his own life.
The only survivor, Chi Rui, realized that his actions were too selfish, but it was too late. Returning to the Chi family, he followed Xiang Tian's dying wish: to take care of Zhi Xia and Xiang Tian's child.
