On Valentine's Day in 1900, the Appleyard College for Girls in Australia, following the British educational tradition, organized an excursion to Hanging Rock. Orphan Sara was unable to join due to delayed payment of her tuition fees and could only watch as her friend Miranda and her classmates set off under Miss McCraw's guidance. Upon arrival, Miranda and three others left the group to climb, and were discovered by Michael and servant Albert, who were also picnicking at the rock. Michael fell in love with Miranda at first sight and followed after her. That evening, the principal received a report of the disappearance of Miss McCraw and the four girls. The police immediately launched an investigation, and the principal was highly anxious about the school’s reputation while Sara, having lost Miranda, became despondent. Michael and Albert searched the cliffs and found one female student, but Miranda remained missing. In despair, Sara was sent back to the orphanage by the principal, and she chose to commit suicide... This film is adapted from Joan Lindsay's novel of the same name and won the Best Cinematography award at the 1977 BAFTA Awards.
