The story takes place in 1946. After the Civil War, somewhere in the center of Spain, there is only despair, poverty, and exiles left. A boy is constantly on the run and finds refuge in a ditch. After the search party leaves, he faces a dangerous and arid plain. Fortunately, he encounters a shepherd on his way across the plain, and the two ultimately choose to travel together. Along the way, they must deal with hunger and lack of water while evading the men sent by the foreman to find the boy. The shepherd becomes the boy's mentor: he explains his profession and his understanding of life. As time passes, the shepherd also learns about the fears the boy wishes to escape from.
