Amy (Brigitte Mira) is a 60-year-old cleaning lady who works hard for a meager salary, living in poverty. By chance, she meets 40-year-old Ali (El Hedi ben Salem), and after they share a dance, Ali offers to take Amy home. As the night deepens, Ali misses the last bus and has to stay at Amy's place. Two lonely people feel an instant connection, and as they talk by candlelight, Amy is filled with deep doubts, but Ali offers her only gentle reassurances. As expected, news of Amy spending the night with a man quickly spreads through the streets, and the prying of neighbors and colleagues makes her uneasy. Helpless, she fabricates a lie, claiming that Ali is her fiancé. This engagement unsurprisingly faces opposition from everyone, who do their best to ostracize and slander the couple, leading them to decide to go away on a trip to avoid the scrutiny. After returning, their circumstances improve, not because the neighbors have accepted them, but because they have found new objects of exclusion. Without outside pressure, however, Amy and Ali's relationship faces cracks due to internal conflicts. The film realistically portrays a cold, harsh society, exploring the various discriminations within it and the lonely, dark aspects of human nature.
