The story takes place in southern France in the 20th century, where Eugène (Daniel Auteuil) and his uncle César (Yves Montand) have long coveted the fertile land of an elderly man named Léon. They finally devise a plan to have him killed. What they did not expect was that Léon, who seemed to have no relatives, actually had a son named Johann (Gérard Depardieu), and Johann's mother was none other than César's former lover whom he had abandoned, a grudge César had harbored all his life without marrying. Johann arrives in the countryside with his wife Aimée (Elisabeth Depardieu) and daughter Manon (Ernestine Mazurowna), completely unaware of the malice from César and Eugène, living a carefree life. César cuts off the water supply that irrigates Johann's land, leading to a drought that causes Johann's fields to wither and his livestock to die of thirst. In despair, Johann falls ill and passes away. Heartbroken, Aimée leaves the sorrowful place, and César and Eugène finally obtain the land they desired. However, the entanglement between the two families does not end there.
