Mother (Sonja Richter) is seriously ill, and brothers Elmer (Harald Kaiser Hermann) and Erik (Albert Rudbeck Lindhardt) are left without care, forced to be sent to a boarding school run by Principal Heck (Lars Mikkelsen). Heck is a man who believes in violence, firmly convinced that only through force can the children in his school truly be made to obey and guided onto the right path. The brothers suffer torment in this so-called school, which is essentially a prison, and the promise that their mother would come to take them home for Christmas becomes their only motivation to survive. However, as they wait and wait, they receive news of their mother's death. Lilian (Sofie Gråbøl) is the new literature teacher at the school, and she keenly notices the inhumane atrocities happening within its walls, yet feels powerless to change anything.
