Premiered at the main competition of the 2017 Berlin Film Festival. In 1947, the British government appointed the last Viceroy, Lord Mountbatten, to assist in the independence and peaceful transfer of power between post-war India and Pakistan. Within and around the Viceroy's House, the grand saga of national love intertwines with the smaller tales of personal affairs, all entangled in this tumultuous and shocking epic. To commemorate the 70th anniversary of India's independence, a prestigious team of award-winning filmmakers from the UK, the US, and India has come together to create this masterpiece. The film is directed by British-Indian female director Gurinder Chadha, who adapted her grandparents' true love story that transcended race and faith, incorporating the legendary events of the last Viceroy's ill-timed circumstances. It stars Hugh Bonneville from "Downton Abbey" and Michael Gambon from "Harry Potter." In 1947, the British government appointed the last Viceroy, who was Queen Elizabeth II's uncle—Lord Mountbatten, to assist in the independence and peaceful transfer of power between India and Pakistan after World War II. However, as history shows, this process of national separation was not as smooth as imagined; within and outside the Viceroy's House, the grand saga of national love intertwines with smaller personal affairs, all caught up in this tumultuous and shocking epic. The film takes a historical perspective, featuring grand scenes and meticulous details, as classic figures (like Mahatma Gandhi, the Father of India) and dramatic characters intertwine. This is a tribute by Gurinder Chadha, who poured over a decade of her personal effort into preparing this self-written and directed work for her homeland. The cast encompasses generations of actors from the UK, the US, and India, showcasing strong acting talents.
