The story takes place in a certain location in Jiangnan during the Cultural Revolution. The director of the Anti-Reform Hospital Revolutionary Committee, Jia Yimin (played by Ye Zhikang), responds to the instructions of the “Central Cultural Revolution” liaison, kicking out the “stinky old nine” and promoting a “young pioneer.” He unexpectedly assigns the cook, Yao Yao (played by Xie Yuan), who has only studied medicine for a few days, to operate on an emergency patient, Lu Daniu (played by Wang Guojing). As a result, he ends up cutting off a section of the patient’s healthy intestine while the diseased appendix remains inside.
