As early as December 2010, Anderson intended to adapt Thomas Pynchon's "Inherent Vice," but due to the funding for another new film, "The Master," arriving earlier, "Inherent Vice" was temporarily shelved. "Inherent Vice" has a wrapper similar to Chandler's detective novels, where Los Angeles private detective Doc unexpectedly encounters his ex-girlfriend Shasta and hears from her an unsubstantiated story about a bizarre kidnapping case, the victim—her current lover—is a "wealthy" real estate mogul. Doc knows very well that "love" is a vague term that can lead to a string of troubles at any time, yet he fatefully dives into Shasta's story and becomes increasingly entangled, with surfers, pimps, drug dealers, rock musicians, and loan sharks who have committed murder, all appearing and disappearing...
