Tom (played by Alain Delon) is a poor young man who recently encountered a great opportunity. His wealthy friend Philippe's (played by Maurice Ronet) father approached Tom, hoping he could help find his son, who spends his days indulging in a flamboyant lifestyle. In return, Tom will receive a considerable reward. Following Philippe's trail, Tom arrives in Nimes, where he meets Philippe and his fiancée, Marjorie (played by Marie Laforêt). Tom feels envious of Philippe's extravagant life, and Marjorie's beauty and tenderness captivate him, leading to an evil thought. During an outing, Tom plans and kills Philippe, and then, to cover up his crime, he also kills Philippe's friend. A lie must be concealed by countless other lies, and after obtaining everything he desires, Tom will ultimately face judgment.
