Mia (Emma Stone) longs to be an actress, but so far she remains just a regular barista in a coffee shop on set, despite continuously auditioning for various roles, Mia has only encountered failure. One day, at a party, Mia meets a man named Sebastian (Ryan Gosling). Initially, there is a small conflict between them, but soon Mia is drawn to Sebastian's shining talent and his pure pursuit of jazz music, and they eventually come together. Under Sebastian's encouragement, Mia quits her job at the coffee shop to focus on writing her own script, while Sebastian, in order to earn a stable income, joins a popular jazz band and begins playing modern jazz, which he does not like, unexpectedly becoming very popular. As time goes by, the two, who are striving to pursue their dreams, find themselves drifting further apart, facing a choice between their ideals and their relationship.
