Mumble is an outcast in the Emperor Penguin family, often ostracized and discriminated against — the reason being that in the Emperor Penguin community, not being able to sing is seen as shameful, and Mumble happens to be one such penguin. However, he excels at dancing; his exceptional dance skills did not bring him luck, and the iron-faced leader banished him from the colony. Mumble wanders in the outside world but encounters another group: the Adelie Penguins. These penguins love to dance and refer to themselves as the "2266 Dance Troupe." They are amazed by Mumble's dance moves and invite him to their dance party. However, on the way to the party, Mumble meets a wandering soul who dances to rock music, and he guides Mumble to unravel the mystery in his heart: why is penguin food becoming increasingly scarce, why are there large iron ships on the sea, and why are the people on those ships cruel to penguins? Thus, Mumble tracks down an iron-hulled ship and ventures into the human world.
