A smoking ban has turned a narrow back alley into a new social area, where countless men and women have to retreat to smoke. Regardless of their status or reasons for being there, they are all just smokers, engaging in nothing more than sharing smokes and light-hearted banter. Zhiming (played by Shawn Yue), who works at an advertising company, meets Chunchiao (played by Miriam Yeung), who works at a cosmetics counter, in that alley. Zhiming’s unfortunate situation and his act of lighting a cigarette for Chunchiao endear him slightly to her. Over the next few days and nights, they exchange texts and meet for cigarettes at the street corner. Feelings are transmitted through their thumbs, and love blooms within the smoke, ultimately leading to Chunchiao breaking up with her boyfriend, Jiahao (played by Wong Te Ba). Just as Chunchiao is ready to fully embrace her relationship with Zhiming, his attitude becomes ambiguous. The smoke continues to linger in the alley, but it fails to bridge the gap that has emerged between them. With the determination to increase tobacco taxes announced, many smokers begin to search for and stockpile cigarettes. During their search, Zhiming and Chunchiao reunite at the convenience store where they first met, and that night, they agree to go look for cigarettes together... The film was shot in just five weeks over 15 shooting days, which is quite short. Due to the excessive use of strong language and realistic scenes, "Love in a Puff" was rated Category III when it was released in Hong Kong.
