After divorcing her husband, the daughter leaves her 10-year-old son Jingjing (Fei Yang) with her aging father (Zhu Xu), who lost his wife years ago and now lives alone in a southern city, under the pretense of "studying Peking opera." Many years ago, the once-famous Peking opera musician was unhappy with his daughter's marriage and her avoidance of the art, creating a rift between them. When they first meet, the atmosphere is awkward, and he harbors an inexplicable resentment towards Jingjing. Upon learning that his daughter has divorced her husband, the father feels both guilt and a new affection for Jingjing, leading to a gradually normalizing relationship between the grandfather and grandson.
The two visit Lian Gu (Wang Yumei), a Buddhist who also lives alone. Her words help Jingjing gain some insight into life, and he notices that his grandfather and Lian Gu have a deep respect for each other, akin to a married couple. Lian Gu receives letters from her husband, who has been silent for 40 years, sent from Taiwan. The grandfather feels the weight of this news, but Lian Gu does not wait for her husband’s return—she soon receives bad news and falls seriously ill, eventually passing away. In her last moments, Lian Gu expresses immense gratitude for the grandfather's years of care and hopes he can help her attain peace in the afterlife. To fulfill Lian Gu’s wish, the grandfather considers selling his huqin, and at that moment, Jingjing gives him a profound unexpected inspiration.
